United Kingdom natural gas and oil production continues decade-long decline

(Wed, 21 Sep 2011) The United Kingdom (U.K.) is the largest producer of oil and second-largest producer of natural gas in the European Union. Due to steadily declining production since the early 2000s, the U.K. became a net importer of natural gas and oil in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Greenhouse gases trap heat from the sun and warm the planet’s surface. Of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, 87% are related to energy consumption. Since 1990, greenhouse gas emissions in the United States have grown by about 1% per year. In 2005, about 21% of the world’s total energy-related carbon dioxide was emitted by the United States.
